History & meaning

The Reggia di Venaria Reale was built in the 17th century under Duke Carlo Emanuele II of Savoy, originally as a magnificent residence and hunting lodge. It was intended to represent the power and influence of the House of Savoy and served as a venue for court ceremonies, receptions and celebrations.

Over the centuries, the palace was extended and redesigned several times. After the end of the monarchy, military units used parts of the building and grounds, and some areas fell into disrepair. A comprehensive restoration began in the 1990s, which restored the palace and gardens to their former glory.

Today, the Reggia di Venaria Reale is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a cultural center with exhibitions, events and concerts - a living testimony to Baroque splendor.
