Piedmont around Turin

Piedmont stretches from the Alps in the north to the wine hills in the south. For day trips from Turin there are three directions to choose from: the wine regions of the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato, the Susa Valley with the Sacra di San Michele and – for a long day – Lake Maggiore.

The vineyard landscapes of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014. Five wine-growing areas and the Castle of Cavour are protected. This is where the grapes for Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera and Moscato d’Asti grow.

Important for planning: the wine tastings and the truffle hunt on this page start directly at the winery or in the area around Alba. You arrange your own transport from Turin. Only the tour to the Sacra di San Michele starts by bus in Turin.

Sacra di San Michele on your own

The abbey stands on Monte Pirchiriano at the entrance to the Susa Valley, at 962 metres. The first church was built around 983–987. The Sacra is considered a symbol of Piedmont and one of the inspirations for Umberto Eco's novel "The Name of the Rose". It is known for the Scalone dei Morti, a staircase of 243 steps.

Lake Maggiore and the Borromean Islands

A trip to Lake Maggiore from Turin makes for a long day. The usual destination is the Borromean Islands off Stresa: Isola Bella and Isola Madre with their palaces and gardens, and Isola dei Pescatori, a fishing village with restaurants.

  • In 2026 the Borromean Islands have been open to visitors again since 12 March.
  • The most convenient way to reach the islands is by boat from Stresa. The Navigazione Laghi island tour covering all three islands only runs in season – current timetables are on their website.
  • The botanical garden of Villa Taranto in Verbania-Pallanza has been open since 6 March 2026.

We currently can't recommend a tour from Turin to Lake Maggiore.
