Specialities on a food tour in Turin

What makes Turin's food special

Turin calls itself the capital of Italian chocolate. On top of that come specialities that originated here and are now known throughout Italy:

  • Giandujotto: the chocolate shaped like an upturned boat was created in 1865 in the workshop of Prochet Gay e C. on Piazza San Carlo – from cocoa, sugar and Piedmontese Tonda Gentile hazelnuts.
  • Bicerin: coffee, chocolate and milk cream, served in layers in a glass. The drink evolved from the 18th-century bavareisa and has been recognised as a traditional drink of Piedmont since 2001.
  • Vermouth: in 1786 Antonio Benedetto Carpano developed in Turin the recipe of wine, herbs and spices that became the model for all types of vermouth.
  • Grissini: these thin breadsticks are considered a Turin invention, classically "stirato" (stretched) or the knobbly "rubatà".

For savoury dishes there are agnolotti, vitello tonnato or dishes "in carpione", marinated in vinegar.
